Lake Norman Soccer
"Your Journey to Soccer Excellence"
About Our Directors
Under 6 and 9 Programs (Pre-Academy)
The Pre-Academy program is designed to introduce kids ages 5 to 8 to soccer or accelerate the development of the younger soccer players. Our desire is to instill a love of the game in those that participate. The emphasis will be fun and enjoyment while learning the fundamentals of dribbling, passing and the joy of scoring goals. Pre- Academy will stress player development only.
The approach will utilize pool training sessions to develop skills and techniques through repetition and small sided games. Our staff ratio to players will be 1 to 12 or less to assure your child is receiving the best personal soccer instruction.
Through our ‘Joga Bonito’ program we will motivate each child to learn the juggling skills at an early age which becomes the foundation for playing the “beautiful game” of soccer at competitive levels.
All sessions will be led by our Nationally qualified Directors of Coaching on Wednesday after school from
3:30 PM to 4:45 PM. Sessions will conclude with a 24 minute small sided game each week. This program is designed to enable players to participate on a Recreation team concurrently while experiencing the professional training offered in our Pre- Academy program.
Under 9 Programs (Academy)
This year at Lake Norman Soccer Club we are offering an Academy option for the U9 age group. The Academy is designed to develop young soccer players and promote a love of the game. The emphasis at this age is fun and enjoyment where everything is positive and creativity is encouraged. This Academy program will stress player development. It is much more important that we develop players within the proper framework at this age as opposed to focusing on winning. If the goal is primarily to win, coaches can often loose sight of the development the player and the team. If we focus on developing the player and putting them in the best training situation, winning will come.
The approach will utilize pool training sessions. Our staff ratio to players will be 1 to 15 or less to assure your child is receiving the best personal soccer instruction.
Our goal is to develop skills and techniques through repetition and small sided games. Through our Joga Bonito program we will motivate each child to learn the juggling skills at an early age which becomes the foundation for playing the “beautiful game” of soccer at competitive levels.
All sessions will be lead by a Director of Coaching assisted by qualified parent coaches. There will be two training sessions per week and inter-academy games or friendly games with other Clubs on weekends. Travel will be local to our area. Participating in any Festivals will be recommended by the DOC and decided by the parents interested.
Under 9 & 10 Programs (Challenge)
LNSC places emphasis on the introduction to competitive soccer for talented younger players and teams.
We believe the key at this age is technical development so each player can feel comfortable on the ball regardless of the position being played on the field. Players are encouraged to work on mastering various techniques in dribbling, passing and trapping the ball. These techniques are incorporated in each pool training session and in their team session with the coach. The LNSC curriculum designed by our Chip Warner and Godwin Iwelumo is re-emphasized by the team coach in the following session. The curriculum includes sessions on dribbling, passing and receiving, finishing, and defending and is used by all of our coaches especially at the younger ages.
The emphasis for this age group will be on the development of the individual player and team effectiveness, rather than winning. Teams will play in the local Charlotte Area Youth Soccer League.
Each team will have a full time, qualified coach leading two sessions a week (a pool training session and a team session). The directors of coaching will support the coach and team members by being actively involved in training sessions and game day operations of the team.
Each team will attend approx 4 tournaments per year. The LNSC Fall Classic Tournament in November is a mandatory event for each team. Teams will compete in at least two additional events where the team will travel on a regional basis. These events will be recommended by the DOC and determined by the coach and parents.
Under 11 & 12 programs (Challenge and Classic)
At 11 & 12 the focus must still be on techniques and skills but we begin to introduce sessions that develop tactical awareness so the player can begin recognizing when and where certain skills should be applied. These sessions are based are designed to raise confidence and ability on and off the ball. We attempt to make learning fun so that the player will want to practice these techniques on their own between practice sessions. Small sided games are a principle staple to giving these players the repetitive opportunities in fast paced play to build confidence in these new skills.
Each team will have two sessions per week. One session will be technical led by a DOC as outlined above and the second session will be the coach’s opportunity to prepare the team for the upcoming game that weekend.
The Challenge teams will play in the Charlotte Area Youth League. Players and teams especially talented will play Classic under the NCYSA. Both Classic and challenge teams will play mostly in the Charlotte area but will travel within the western part of NC.
Each team will have a full time, qualified coach leading two sessions a week
(a pool training session and a team session). The directors of coaching will support the coach and team members by being actively involved in training sessions and game day operations of the team.
These teams will attend at 4 to 6 tournaments per year. The LNSC Fall Classic Tournament in November is a mandatory event for each team. Teams will compete in at least three additional events where the team will travel on a regional basis. These events will be recommended by the DOC and determined by the coach and parents.
Under 13 & 14 Programs (Challenge and Classic)
Emphasis continues to be the technical development our players introduced from
Pre-Academy through U12. In addition, teaching “the game” becomes a larger portion of the training. Each team will learn how the technical skills are used tactically to create teamwork to enhancing the effectiveness of play. Each player will be exposed to the various roles and responsibilities of different positions on the field. Tactics for defending, midfield play and the attack will greatly emphasized.. Teams will begin to experience the various ‘systems of play’ used by different teams. The teams will play Challenge in the Charlotte Area Youth league or Classic 1 or 2 Division through the NCYSA. Games will mostly be in the Charlotte area with traveling within the western part of the NC.
At the Classic level players must challenge themselves to play hard and aspire to play at the next level. Personal development of each player is the primary goal however; winning becomes critical because in North Carolina there is promotion/relegation in league play. We measure success in more than wins and losses. We believe coaches consistently encouraging and motivating players to apply the skills and tactic they have learned will bring results rewarding to the effort the players and team invest.
Classic teams will have a full time, qualified coach who will lead two training session per week with the Director of Coaching (DOC) leading one of the sessions assisted by the coach every other week. The coach will model leadership and possess the motivation, communication and coaching skills necessary to develop the team in this a competitive environment.
Each team will attend at least 6 tournaments per year. The LNSC Fall Classic Tournament in November and the State Cup if qualified are mandatory events for each team. There will be at least two ‘travel’ events where the team will travel on a regional basis to compete and two remaining events either locally or regional. The events will be recommended by the DOC and determined by the coach and parents.
Under 15 – 18 (Classic)
The technical skills have become second nature for these players and the emphasis now is to teach the most complex tactical side of the game. Tactics and technique will become equal in importance. Each team will be expected to build upon on their ability to execute the tactical aspects of the game. Each player will know and understand the various roles and responsibilities of different positions on the field and handle the more complex strategies of play. The Classic 1 and 2 teams will play primarily in western NC but will on occasion travel across the state.
At this level players will be challenged and prepared to play at the next level. Performance as a team still comes first, however results are important to maintain a leading team because of the promotion/relegation process in NCYSA play. We believe that winning is a by product of approachable coaches consistently challenging their players to believe hard work and perseverance will bring success as individual players and as a team.
Each Classic team will have a full time, qualified coach who will lead two training session work under the direction of the Director of Coaching (DOC). The coach will model leadership and possess the highest level of motivation and communication skills and coaching ability.
Each team will attend at least 6 tournaments per year. The LNSC Fall Classic and State Cup are mandatory events for each team. There will be at least four ‘travel’ events where the team will travel on a regional basis to compete in a club supported event. The events will be recommended by the DOC and determined by the coach and parents.

In subsequent years the league will expand to girls and boys up to U18. Players will be given college recruiting seminars and exposed to colleges all over the east. Teams will play a minimum of 12 league games a year and as many as 10 tournaments, once a month. Travel will be year round with games on weekends in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. The LNSC teams playing in the Southern Regional League will be known as the LNSC Eclipse. Each team will have a nationally qualified coach who will lead two to three training session per week working in conjunction with the Director of Coaching at LNSC. The coach will model a high level of leadership and possess the motivation and communication skills to motivate players to compete successfully at the highest levels of competition.
Each LNSC Eclipse team will be given the opportunity to play and compete at a regional/national level requiring players to possess strong technical skills and possess a good understanding of the tactical aspects of the game.
